Day 2. . .( part 1) Swimming with Whale Sharks
I wasn't able to sleep at all last night. The anticipation inside me was smoldering, in a couple hours I will be swimming side by side with Whale Sharks!
We were to meet at the scuba shop at 0800. I set the alarm on my cell phone the night before, but as usual I am awake way before the alarm ever goes off. My husband is still sleeping and decided to let him sleep a little longer, so opened a book hoping to make the time go a little faster. I finished my book, and woke him up. It was around 0700 or at least that's what I thought. We packed what we needed for the day, changed out our beach towels for dry ones, and proceeded to breakfast. Funny, nobody is around. As it became closer to 0800 we just thought we would head up to the scuba shop we were meeting everyone else at, and skip breakfast. Again No one was there. Hmmmmm.
Interesting!
Now it's 0820, and still no one is around. My husband finally found someone and asked what the time was. All I can say is that it's not my fault if my cell phone did not automatically change the time. So basically, I've been up since 0530, woke the hubby up at 0600 just to be somewhere at 0800. So far not a good start to the morning, however now we were able to eat breakfast.
Once back at the scuba shop we grabbed all our gear, met the other people who would be joining us for the day, and headed to the boat. The water was gorgeous, and once again the excitement was overwhelming. After about a very long and bumpy 1 hour ride we reached our first destination the "Blue Water" to start looking for these giants. We sit, we sit, and we sit. Nothing!! After 30 minutes I start to lose faith. All that's going through my mind is . . ."This isn't going to happen," "We've come all this way, and we are not going to find one," my excitement is slowly turning into disappointment. And the worst part is there is not a drop of Tequila, or Cerveza on this damn boat!
The Captain decides to try another spot a couple more miles away. Once closer to our new destination and the boat slows down, there she is, and she was amazing.
Due to regulations only 2 people along with the Dive Master are permitted to dive at a time. Lucky me I get to go first. There is really no time to think, sitting there with my mask and snorkel on, sitting on the side of the boat with my flippers dangling, watching this creature swim towards us, I hear the words " JUMP, JUMP" and away I went.
At first I couldn't see anything, but then out of the dark blue water, there she is. She is coming my way. She is magnificent. As I get beside her within a hands reach, I realize how fast I have to swim just to keep up with her. Within a couple minutes I'm exhausted and she's gone. Back to the boat to let another couple of people experience this gentle giant. As I get back onto the boat, I cannot stop smiling. What an experience? I want to do it again!
As the day goes on I was able to swim with the whale shark 4 separate times. Each time being better than the last. There are no words to truly describe these creatures. There are no pictures or videos that do them justice. This was an experience of a lifetime, and at that moment thankful that Ecuador didn't work out.
